Cycling

Lance Armstrong is dangerously close to the yellow jersey, already

“Armstrong’s team, Astana, won the team time trial in commanding fashion by finishing the 24.2-mile (39-kilometer) course in 46 minutes, 29 seconds. If Astana had crossed the finish line just a whisper faster, Armstrong would have moved into first overall. But the seven-time Tour winner is in second now, less than a second behind Saxo Bank’s Fabian Cancellara. Cancellara, from Switzerland, joked about the fractions turning his way, owing it to ‘the precision of Swiss timing.’ Armstrong, 37, who erased nearly all of his 40-second deficit in one day, admitted to ‘a bit of disappointment. But I have seven of the yellow jerseys at home,’ he said. ‘At one point, we thought we had it, yet if I look back on our performance … we were as sound as we could be. This is a long race; maybe there’s one (yellow jersey) in my future.’ “

Minor League Baseball

Round Rock Express 1 – Memphis Redbirds 3

“The Express failed to snap a slump on Tuesday night, losing to Memphis 3-1 for their fifth straight defeat. In losing four consecutive games against Memphis, Round Rock scored a total of five runs. Memphis fared slightly better offensively, totaling 11 runs.”

College Football

Incoming Texas State lineman Prestin Brown was named first-team All-Tournament at the IFAF Junior World Championship

“Brown recorded eight total tackles (two assists) during the three-game tournament. He wrapped up two Canadian ball carriers in the final game, a 41-8 victory for the Americans. Team USA ran through the competition at the tournament, beating its three opponents by a combined score of 172-3. The Americans walloped France 78-0 and then Mexico, 55-0. When Brown arrives at Texas State in August, he’ll be looking to fill one of several empty spots on the Bobcat defensive line.”

College Basketball

Texas State is re-tooling the bench after a rough season

“First, the Bobcats lost Emmanuel Bidias A’ Moute to academic probation. Texas State then lost two players (Gordon Taylor and Tre Nichols) when they quit the team. Sophomore center Ty Gough transferred from the program, not long after the season ended. Rencher’s hiring should remedy the second problem — player discipline and retention. ‘My strengths are still being able to relate to the players,’ Rencher said. ‘I’m learning how to recruit and how to be a good coach, but right now, with the guys that are the program, I know what they’re going through.’ “
